M.I.A. Dropped from Music Festival After Controversial Comments About Black Lives Matter
M.I.A.may own the fact that she's one of music's "Bad Girls", but it appears not everyone is a fan of her outspoken behavior.
The British rapper has been dropped as the headliner for London's upcoming Afropunk Festival, after comments she made about the Black Lives Matter movement caused controversy.
"After discussing the situation with the artist and the community, a decision was agreed upon by all involved that M.I.A will no longer headline Afropunk London," festival organizers said in a statement on Friday. "This community is something we are incredibly proud of, and this community will always be a priority for us."
Perhaps in response, the 40-year-old singer tweeted on Thursday "If you ask how I'm doing, I'm doing fine."
In April, M.I.A. gave a statement to London's Evening Standard about Beyoncé's Super Bowl performance, saying the Black Lives Matter movement was similar to what Public Enemy and Lauryn Hill were saying in the '80s and '90s.
