A severe earthquake struck central Italy early Wednesday, leaving at least six people dead and others trapped under rubble, multiple reports confirm.

Italian towns Amatrice and Accumoli near Rieti were hit the hardest by the 6.2 magnitude quake with residents taking to the streets for safety as the aftershocks continued into the early morning hours.

The Associated Press reports that the mayor of the Umbrian town of Amatrice said residents are buried under the debris of collapsed buildings and that "the town isn't here anymore."

Stefano Petrucci, mayor of the quake-hit town of Accumoli, also said that a family of four had been found under rubble.
